Legs & Co. - Hooked on Classics

Suefan recently sent me this clip, in response to a request from PattiforPM. it's Legs & Co, dancing to The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra's Hooked on Classics.

Jings. I've no desire to criticise either the choreography or the dancing, but this record really is the ultimate example of the dreadful late seventies/early eighties fashion for medley-with-a-click-track-shoved-in records. I'm no musical stuffed shirt: I'll take vernacular pop music over academic music any day of the week: but pop music, already heavy on rhythm and beat, can stand up to this relentless heavy-handed bump-click a lot better than the lightweight romantic stuff that's being butchered here. And who is to blame? The RPO musicians? A group of professionals I'm sure, who consider it their job to take on whatever work is offered. The producers? Professionals again, doubtless with families to feed. TOTP? BBC? L&C? They all have the task of reflecting the nation's taste. Who's left to blame then? I blame the people who actually bought this vile thing, in enough numbers to ensure that it was forced on the rest of us. And the same people who bought Start on 45, Tight Fit's Back to the Sixties, and all the other Frankendisco records. Pah!

But thanks to Suefan nonetheless, for the clip; and PattiforPM for the opportunity to rant.

From the ridiculous to the sublime: A good antidote to this aweful record is the Portsmouth Sinfonia's Classical Muddley.

Sometimes I really feel for Ms Colby - particularly when we get to 1981 and the summer that taste forgot. Well, this is definitely not one of her best numbers ever, but after having come up with a half-decent routine to Stars on 45, you have to admire that when handed another god-awful medley record she didn't just frisbee it right back at the producer and take the girls off to Brighton for the week. It's testament to her professionalism as a choreographer that she actually came up with a reasonably entertaining and - with those can-can squeals - nicely tongue-in-cheek routine to this vile travesty of taste. Thank you to suefan, PattiforPM and YMG for the clip. I'm just pleased no one on TOTP had to dance to Rondo Veneziano....

Classical music to the disco beat `whats up with that`.The girls seem to be down with this stuff, i`ve never seen them so smiley. I reckon you lot ARE sounding like musical stuffed shirts, but i agree this was a god awful time chart wise.If this was say 76/77 would you be so critical? I think not !

Thanks SueFan. Girls looks mighty fine, this music is not my favorite, the dance is OK and as Pan's Ruby Legs says the whoops are a total success.

A great show of enthusiasm for this one, the girls all look terrific, but i dont know how they keep coming in every time to perform this frankly simple and un~exceptional stuff, and for five years too.How differant would things have been if FC had had the power to improve things. RIP Miss Colby, you are of my generation, the best.
