Legs & Co. - Rise

Captain peacock speaking. I'm still concerned about the prurient nature of many of the comments posted about these clips. I've been hoping for a general rise in the tone of things, so I'm delighted to see that Ryan has requested this beautiful clip. It's Legs & Co. doing some proper dancing, like what they must have been taught at dance class, to the music of Herb Alpert's Rise, which is as near as proper jazz as we're going to get in this place, what with the noisy primitive beat "music" that's all-pervading.

Cool video. Young Mister Grace do you have the video of Ruby Flipper dancing to Elton John and Kiki Dee's song. I'm not sure what it is called but my Mum and friends wore the same outfit as on Disco Duck. Think that video is cool. amy x

Capt peacock sir, a very lowly Mr lucas here from menswear. Sir i one day aspire the reach the heights of you or even Mr Rumbold, but in the mean time i`ll just settle for admiring these offerings you kindly send to us.
It is a beautiful shoot this one is`nt it. There all greek godesses in my eyes, but theres only one Aphrodite in this set. I`ll surprise you folks, because my nomination is Rosie. Could be her best routine ever !

Amy, do you mean `Dont Go Breaking My Heart`. Ruby danced to that, its on here. But i`m sure what you mean is the xmas totp version danced to by Legs and Co. Yeah i to would like to see that one, good choice that.

Amy, nice thought about ringing the beeb. But i`m sure they wont wanna know. There the enemy these days, to politically correct to recognise our dancing girls.
I`ll give you an example of this. When ever theres a totp2 on nowdays our heroines always seem to be cut out. When that progamme started they were on every week. Dahm bunch of lefties if you ask me.
But who knows you could be right, i`ll get of the soap box now!

Freinds, i`m gonna start a new just for fun, talking point topic tomorrow at 10pm. I hope your gonna join in, you`ll need your thinking caps on though. It may cause us a few diagreements, but i`ll look forward to the results.

Young Mister grace, have you given any further thought to the disscussion widget. I know your a busy man, with websites to run and even a large London department store to oversee.

Hi All, sorry to be contrary to Ryan as he seems a nice bloke generally but I must argue about the Beeb. I think they were dimwits in the 70's/80's when they deleted all those vital shows with those unique dance routines but the new generation of archivists seem very diligent in looking after the archives and seem to have some desire to store old shows digitally and then they could be available for the likes of us folk. For this reason I think Amy's idea to contact them is excellent as they need to know we care so much so phone/text/write away as will I.

Ryan said...

Pattiforpm you`ve got the wrong end of the stick. I`m not talking about those idiotic archivists in the 70s and 80s its the general set up of the beeb today. I could preach there left wing politics to you, but this isnt the right time or place for that. They woud`nt be intrested in 70s stuff like gorgeous girls gyrating to popular music of the time, only trashy crap from today. As i say, Amy could be right on this one. Amy please dont be mad at me though. But your right pattiforpm, you`ll find i am one of the good guys !

Ryan said...

Sorry pattiforpm ive calmed down now. Ok you maybe right yet again. I will enquire to them . Sorry once again my freind!

Ryan said...

Amy hope your still ok with me. I did`nt intentionally try to diss your comment about the beeb.Im sorry about it, infact i shoot my mouth of to much sometimes. I feel awful now.

PattiforPM said...

Two more things: Ryan I think you are right too about the Beeb in general (although having left the UK 20yrs ago I know much less about these things than I used to)

Secondly, Young Mr Grace I am having trouble uploading a file to you now (I've tried 3x and got to 25% or so then it stalls). Is there something wrong at my end or is the widget not working now?

Young Mister Grace said...

Pattiforpm: upload widget: I haven't had anything uploaded in over a week, so it might be jiggered: I'll try it myself and let you kmow.

It's great to have so many people actively involved in the comments here. I too am frustrated about the lack of availability of all this material, that we all cherish and enjoy, through "official" channels. But I want to steer clear of talking about "The BBC" as if they are a single borg-like entity. I've had a few dealings with different BBC folk over the years, and they seem have the same problems that all big, huge organisations suffer from: there are many fantastic, and a few awful individuals involved. For the sake of the many genuinely helpful, resourceful, creative, and kind people that I've dealt with, I avoid making blanket statements about "The BBC". Like most bureaucracies, there's a tide of red tape, and some human beings in there, fighting the flood. By all means let's point out bone-headed decisions when we see them, but the Beeb isn't a monolith: like the health service, the post office, the libraries, we do a disservice to the many decent people struggling within these faulty machines when we slag the whole organisation off: the faceless bureaucrat zombies don't take it personally: the nice guys do. Rant over folks. Keep up the good talk.

Ryan, yes, I'm still looking at discussion widgets: I've still got a lot of work on, but I should get one sorted out soon. Cheers.

Hi Young Mister Grace,
Can i offer my third apology of the night, for talking about the BBC in such disparaging terms. In case your lawyers have read tonights comments can i state that i meant no malice towards the british broadcasting corporation, and as ever i take on board what you said. I think i will start tomorrow afresh and not trying to put my foot in my mouth when i make comments on your website.
Your humble footsoldier,
Ryan

Young Mister Grace I'm sorry. amy x

Hi Ryan, Yes of course I'm still okay with you. Was sleeping so only just read the comments. You have a good quaility by saying what you feel and think and I like that. So you shouldn't feel awful or bad. I'm sorry. amy x

Young Mister Grace said...

No apologies necessary: I don't want to stop anybody from saying what they think: It's great that you're all here talking. I made an observation, that's all: and I hope all of you feel free to continue to express yourselves. Cheers.

Following a question Ryan asked me, I wonder if people have a favourite Ruby Flipper routine?
Ryan, yes the end of the 'Harvest for the World' number is really nice where they grab people from the audience. The Hairy Cornflake is quick to get in on the act, you notice.
I suppose my favourite RF routines are the lively dance numbers that coincide with the great up-tempo catchy songs like 'You should be dancing' and 'Shake your Booty'. I also like the one for Linda and he Funky boys 'Sold my Rock and Roll.'
For sheer 'Oh My God,How do they Do it' amazement, I just can't get over the thousand mile an hour arm, hand and leg movements of 'Rubberband Man' all perfectly coordinated. Fantastic!
'Love hangover's another of my favourites, starting off all sultry and sexy with Patti slinking over a bed and then getting all disco funky with the others grooving and shaking their stuff.
'Tubular Bells' is an interesting one because it's quite different and out in the garden during the famous summer of 1976.
The Prize for the most bizarre Ruby Flipper routine is surely won hands down by what they did for David Bowie's 'TVC15' where Sue swayed about on a TV monitor and Floyd, Phil and Gavin rolled over furniture on a living room set.
Hope we are all enjoying Sunday.

Dear Young Mister Grace,
This is probably a long shot, but do you have Ruby Flipper's routine to Lou Rawl's 'You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine'?
I suppose if you did have it it would already be posted up here, right?
Thanks.

Young Mister Grace said...

Hi Carl: long shot or not, I do have Rubu Flippers 'You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine' routine. OI'm a bit behond with requests, but I'll add it to the list. Cheers!

Patti's daughter said...

Hi Carl, I guess my fav Ruby Flipper routines are Harvest for the world and Morning glory love the costumes. I also like Rubberband man. if you look carefully my Mum forgets the dance routine at 1:57.

carl said...

Thanks Young Mister Grace.
Keep up the good work!

Carl said...

Hi Patti's daughter,
nice to meet you. There was a mistake in the Rubberband man routine? Sssshhh! I would never have noticed. My jaw was still on the floor in admiration of them all. That routine doesn't take any prisoners!Surely the most complex one Ruby Flipper ever did?

Carl said...

The costumes are good on 'Morning Glory'. They wear them again right at the end of that same edition when they dance to 'Don't Go Breaking my Heart' by Elton John/Kiki Dee. That's another enjoyable routine, as they are surrounded by the studio audience who also join in the high-kicking. It's nice when the audience participate!
The dancing is nice on 'Morning Glory'- am not that fussed on the song, but it is growing on me.

Patti's daughter said...

Hi Carl, it's nice to meet you. Are you a fan of Pan's People and Legs & Co as well? I like the wonderer by Dion and danced by my Mum and Disco Duck. im sorry but i do. amy x

3rd and final test.

Carl said...

Hi Patti's daughter.
I like some of the Pan's people stuff. They did a fantastic routine to 'Your so Vain' in an old black and white TOTP and I liked their dance to Mike Batt's 'Summertime City' amongst others. And who can ever forget the famous (or should I say infamous 'Get Down' dog training session)Is it on here?!!!
I don't know a huge amount about the Legs and Co routines. I'm starting to watch more of their their stuff on this blog. I know your mum and Lulu continued with Legs.
I am fascinated by Ruby Flipper because they are so overlooked (and only because they were so short-lived). Ask anyone about Pan's People and Legs and Co and people automatically know who they are, they have a place in our TV cultural conscience, but mention Ruby Flipper and you will get completely blank looks. Nobody remembers there was anyone between PP and Legs and Co on TOTP. But at least blogs like this and other Internet places can redress the balance a little by having Ruby Flipper on. They were a good troupe and I think they also have a cult status because of not being mentioned as often as their more prolific dance group relatives. How did your mum enjoy the Ruby Flipper days?

This number does not do much for me
because it seems so flat. The girls
perform to the high standard we have all come to know and love, but
this one lacks the "Hells Teeth, look at those girls" factor.

On further viewing, the pretty greek dresses with the girls dancing around this elaborate set
seems of more worth than this simple trumpet solo, which i can
imagine being used as a film soundtrack. FC and her clever work
on this one hides this fact.
